The alternate versions are
The alternate versions are recorded as VBR (variable bit rate)mp3's whilst the normal ones are recorded at CBR (constant bit rate). The only reason this is longer than the other version is that the radio one jingles and trailers haven't been removed from the beginning (nor probably from the end.
An essential mix is (normally) 120 mins long and (also normally) anything else that is there is not needed and just a result of poor editing by the uploader

Can someone please explain the alternate versions to me? I'm getting really confused. What is different??

This version is the alternate one. It is longer and therefore better.
